Woman Publicly Gang-raped After Being Accused Of Witchcraft

A woman was allegedly gang-raped in public at a village in India on Sunday night.
The survivor, who belongs to a scheduled caste family, was dragged out of her residence by her hair, by a group of 18-20 people including women, beaten and gang-raped by the men who also tagged her 'tonhi'— woman who practiced black magic (witchcraft).

The victim, who claimed that she fell unconscious after the thrashing, reached the police station on Monday accompanied by her relatives but police did not register a case. Later, after the intervention of district superintendent of police (SP) and media pressure, a case was lodged on Wednesday.

According to a police source, "The woman has alleged gang rape, harassment, physical assault and branding her 'tonhi' by the group." Although initial medical test revealed she had sustained internal and external injuries, it is yet to be ascertained whether she was raped, he said.

Narrating her grievance to the police in her statement, the victim alleged that she was often compelled by the 'influential people' to step back from the case, but as she refused every time, they started harassing her. "I was suddenly branded 'tonhi' (witch) and the locals tried to boycott me from the village and society. On Sunday, about two dozen people barged into my house, dragged me out by my hair, stripped me in front of the whole village, accusing me of being a 'dayan', and then gang-raped me," she said in her statement
